military would be teeming with cloned doubles.

Likewise, you’d think after two decades, Clay’s Gemini project would be further along in development and the U.S. Junior has been raised independently by Clay and his life experience has been totally different. It’s puzzling that both Lee and Smith didn’t question how Junior would be able to telegraph Henry’s every move. Neither are the film’s amiable secondary characters, led by Mary Elizabeth Winstead (as a DIA agent that doubles as a possible romantic interest) and Benedict Wong as an old chum who happens to have access to a Gulfstream jet that flies Henry wherever the forecast calls for sun.

One of the main enjoyments of Gemini Man is watching Smith trying to off himself, with two sequences - one a motorcycle chase through the streets of Cartagena and the other a fight in the catacombs of Budapest - particularly fun to watch.īut those aren’t enough to plug its many plot holes. His attempt to inject pathos into both characters adds a contemplativeness that one doesn’t usually see in these types of genre films or his prior performances.ĭigital de-aging seems like it’s here to stay (Martin Scorsese will use it to great effect in next month’s The Irishman), so it’s nice to see its use being able to convey real emotion and regret. Still, there is something intriguing about Smith’s performance, both as Henry Brogan, the 51-year-old killer, and Junior, the younger clone. Its hyper-sharp clarity is disorienting and in some of the action scenes, almost laughably fake.Īdditionally hampered by a cliche-ridden script (also credited to Billy Ray and Darren Lemke), the somewhat novel spin on a familiar premise has trouble finding its footing.

Sadly, though, Lee’s decision to shoot the film in a 3D high-frame-rate format takes viewers out of the story. With multi Oscar winner Ang Lee ( Life of Pi, Brokeback Mountain) now in the director’s chair, advances in digital filmmaking make the younger, CG-rendered version of Smith - nicknamed Junior - look stunningly realistic (minus a final, day-lit shot).
